Ingredients For Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free Oatmeal Bars:

  • Gluten-Free Flour Mix – My go-to gluten-free flour mix is Better Batter Gluten-Free Flour. I get consistently good results baking with this blend.
  • Gluten-Free Oats – Make sure to use gluten-free oats. I’ve seen Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free oats in my local grocery store but only the old-fashioned rolled oats. What we need for this recipe are the quick oats. So if you can only get the old-fashioned kind then a quick run through a food processor will turn them into quick oats. I’ll show pictures of that below.
  • Dairy-Free Buttery Spread – Smart Balance or Earth Balance
  • Almond or Cashew Milk
  • brown sugar, two apples, sugar, lemon juice, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves.
  • Always check your labels to make sure that you’re purchasing gluten-free products.

How to Make Quick Oats from Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats:

A food processor with gluten-free oats.If you don’t have quick oats you can make them out of old-fashioned oats by pulsing them in a food processor. You need 1 cup of quick oats for this recipe so put in 1 ½ cups of old-fashioned rolled oats and pulse them 4-5 times to break them up. (This picture is from when I was making No Bake Cookies so that’s why it looks like more than 1 ½ cups of oats.)

A food processor with quick oats made from pulsing old-fashioned rolled oats. This is after they’ve been pulsed 4-5 times and it should measure out to 1 cup.

How To Make Gluten-Free Apple Oatmeal Bars:

Chopped apples for gluten-free oatmeal bars.Peel and chop two apples and place them in a pot along with sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon, and cloves. Bring to a boil and then lower the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes or until apples are tender. Stirring occasionally.

Oatmeal bar crumb topping and base mixture.Mix the dry ingredients together and then cut in the cold buttery spread. You can cut in the butter with a pastry cutter or two forks. Or use a food processor and pulse the ingredients until you have a crumbly mixture.

A white baking pan with gluten-free oatmeal bar mix.Take one cup of the crumb mixture and set aside. Press the remaining mixture into the bottom of a 9×9-inch baking dish.

Cooked apple layer and crumb topping for apple oatmeal bars.Spread the apple filling mixture over the crust and then crumble the remaining crumb mixture evenly over the top.

Baked oatmeal barsBake at 350° for 35 minutes. Remove after baking and place the pan on a wire rack to cool. Then cut into bars.

Yes, these will freeze well. If you want to you can cut them into serving sizes and then place them on a cookie sheet and freeze for an hour or two. Once frozen place them in a freezer bag or container.

How do you tell when they are done? Are they supposed to be golden brown?

Yes, bake them right around 35 minutes and they should be golden brown. Oven temps can vary so if you may need to add or subtract a couple of minutes. I hope you enjoy them!

I haven’t tried making it with that but I think it would. You might cut up the apples a bit so there are smaller bites, but it’s just a preference.

I have a citrus allergy so I cannot add lemon juice. Is there an alternative? Thank you.

I would suggest just leaving it out. There won’t be a dramatic change in the recipe.
