    Why you’ll love this recipe

    • With fresh and simple ingredients, you can feel good about knowing exactly what you’re eating. No need for any store-bought guacamole packets that they sell near the avocados.
    • You can put this recipe together in about ten to fifteen minutes. It’s perfect for those moments when you need a delicious dip fast.
    • You can adjust the ingredients to your preference, whether you like your guacamole chunky or smooth, with a hint of garlic or a kick of spice.

    Ingredient notes

Guacamole Ingredients with avocados, jalapeno, roma tomato, cilantro, half of a white onion, two garlic cloves and two limes all on a wooden cutting board.

    Avocados
When shopping for avocados, look for avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure. You’ll want ripe but not mushy. Also, if you flick off the little stem at the top of the avocado, the color underneath will show you a lot about the ripeness. If it won’t come off, it’s not ripe. If it’s green, it’s ripe or almost ripe; if it’s brown, it’s too ripe. And if you can only find firm avocados, they will ripen at home with a day or two in a paper bag.

    Lime Juice
Lime juice adds a fresh, zingy flavor and also helps keep the avocados fresh.

    Jalapeno
A finely diced jalapeño adds a bit of heat. If you want a milder guacamole, you can leave the jalapeño out.

    Onions
White onion is classic here, adding a nice bite. You could also use a red onion or green onions if you like those better.

    Cilantro
Cilantro adds a wonderful flavor to the guac. If you’re not a fan of cilantro, you can leave it out.

    Garlic
Garlic gives a boost and depth of flavor with its pungent flavor.

    Tomato
For a fresh touch, diced tomatoes add juiciness and color.

    Salt and Pepper
Salt is the unsung hero that brings all the guacamole flavors together. Sea salt or a mineral salt are great choices. Start with half a teaspoon and if needed add more up to one teaspoon. Black pepper adds a depth of flavor to the guac.

    How to make guacamole

A glass serving bowl full of homemade guacamole.

Cut the avocados in half and remove the pits. Spoon out the flesh and place it in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Mash with a potato masher or fork, leaving some small chunks of avocado.

Next, juice the limes with a citrus juicer. Add the juice to the avocados and stir to coat.

Then finely dice the tomato, jalapeno, and onion. Add to the mixing bowl.

Cut off most of the cilantro stems, dice the rest, and add to the bowl.

Using a garlic press, mince the garlic cloves, and add them to the bowl.

Add the sea salt and pepper. Mix all the ingredients and take a sample taste. You can add up to another 1/2 teaspoon more of sea salt if needed.

You can serve it immediately or let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld more.

    How to store

To keep your guacamole from browning too quickly, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface. When you want more, simply pull back the plastic, remove what you want, and push it back down to cover it. You can also add an extra squeeze of lime juice before refrigerating.

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
