The base of this dairy-free frosting is palm shortening. You should be able to find palm shortening in your local grocery store, but if not you can order it online through Amazon or Tropical Traditions.
This Vanilla Frosting goes wonderfully with my Spice Cake Recipe , Carrot Cake, or Peppermint Whoopie Pies. I’ve also slathered it on warm cinnamon rolls. Yum!

I am assuming that this in an “S” ? And if so, can it be made “FP” ?
Thanks
Patty
MamaShire
Yes, this recipe is an “S”. And I don’t see anyway this recipe could be an “FP”. I wish. I would probably eat it everyday if it was! 🙂
Brenda
Please clarify “Can be stored on counter for a couple of or refrigerate.”
MamaShire
Hi Brenda, thanks for bringing that to my attention. Yes, that needed clarifying. I updated the post, but here is the updated info. “Can be stored in a covered container on counter for a couple of days or refrigerated for up to 5 days.”
Kerry
Is there a substitution option for the palm shortening? I don’t need dairy free
MamaShire
Hi Kerry, Briana Thomas has a vanilla frosting that is not dairy-free that you might try. You can find it on her Zucchini Bar post.
Michelle
Can u find palm shortening in stores or just online?
MamaShire
Hi Michelle, yes, I’ve been able to find it in our local grocery stores. Hopefully, it will be available where you are too. If not, you might ask to see if they would start carrying it.
Christy
Can the palm oil be substituted with butter?
Kelly
So I checked Brianas recipe and it has cream cheese.
I need dairy free- BUT butter is still acceptable. E about sour cream, cream cheese, etc
Can I substitute butter for the palm oil?
Christy
oops sorry, just saw your previous answer to the same question – never mind!!
Joy
Hi! Do you find that this frosting leaves a waxy feeling in the mouth because of the palm shortening?
MamaShire
Hi Joy, I don’t know that I would call it waxy, but it does have a slightly different feel than icing made with dairy. I wish there was something that we could make that was exactly like dairy based frosting but this is a lovely alternative.
Dee
This looks good! Have you used this as a base to make chocolate or peanut butter frosting?
MamaShire
Hi Dee,
I haven’t yet, but it sounds great! I’ll put it on my list.
Michelle
Is this full fat canned coconut milk or just the carton kind?
MamaShire
Hi Michelle, I use canned coconut milk.
Jen
Can you tell me what the coconut flour adds to this frosting? I’m on the hunt for a dairy free frosting and I plan to try yours out – thanks!
MamaShire
It thickens it a bit, like giving it some body.
Sarah
Do you taste the coconut from the flour and oil?
MamaShire
No, it’s not noticeable. And you can use refined coconut oil that does not have any coconut taste.
Teresa
Thanks so much for this! My husband is allergic to dairy and I have found it hard to find healthy dairy free frosting recipes. Excited to try this!
