Gluten-Free French Toast
The French toast batter is a mixture of eggs, dairy-free butter and milk, brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon for the most delicious flavor for the bread to be dipped in. And frying it in a skillet or griddle only takes a few minutes. If you don’t need it to be dairy-free, I have alternatives listed for that below.
How to Make the Best French Toast
You’ll want a 10-inch or 12-inch skillet or a griddle to fry these in. So, have one of those out and ready to go.
I’ve found that mixing the batter in a mixing bowl that is wide at the base is the easiest to work with when it comes to dipping the bread in.
Melt the dairy-free buttery spread and add that to the mixing bowl with almond milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and eggs. Whisk it all together until it is combined.
Heat the skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of buttery spread to melt.
Dip just a few pieces of bread slices at a time into the batter, making sure each side gets coated with the batter. Then place in skillet and heat for 2-3 minutes on both sides.
Place the cooked French toast on a wire rack in a baking pan in a warm oven (170°) in single layers until they are all cooked.
Put another tablespoon of buttery spread in the skillet before adding the next batch of bread. Continue frying as directed. Serve with maple syrup or powdered sugar.
Ingredients for Gluten-Free French Toast
Dairy-free buttery spread – Smart Balance or Earth Balance
Brown sugar
Vanilla
Cinnamon
Almond Milk – other kinds of plant-based milk can be used
Eggs
*If you don’t need this to be dairy-free, use regular butter and milk.
Gluten-Free Bread – Use your favorite gluten-free bread. If using homemade gluten-free bread, be sure it’s at least a day old.
How to Store French Toast
Store any leftover French Toast in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
How to Freeze French Toast
Homemade French toast freezes really well. Allow them to cool completely before freezing. There are a couple of ways that I would recommend freezing them. First, place them in a freezer bag with a layer of parchment paper or wax paper between each layer. The second way is to place them in a single layer on a cookie sheet and place them in the freezer for a few hours, and then, once frozen, put them in a freezer bag to store.
