Years ago, I would use a lot of boxed mixes. They were easy and there was usually coupons for them making this type of meal very inexpensive.
One day when I was having my daughters help me with supper I told them to just read the box to know how to make it. It hit me that day, that I needed to teach them more about cooking with real ingredients and not just purchased mixes.
Later when we had to switch to eating gluten and dairy-free it was a blessing that we had already begun cooking with whole foods as it made the transition easier. Don’t get me wrong, it was still hard, but I think overall it helped that transition to make more sense.
These two easy homemade hamburger helper variations are so easy to make! Yes, it does call for a couple of packaged short cuts, but they are still healthy options to make supper come together quickly and inexpensively!
One ingredient you might not be used to using is nutritional yeast. It’s fairly inexpensive and gives food a wonderful cheesy flavor. I use it in a lot of my recipes. It’s also a good source of B vitamins.
If you are following Trim Healthy Mama these meals are an S. If you prefer you can rinse the ground beef with hot water and they would be an FP meal.

I made the Italian version last night and loved it. I was surprised, especially since it had no cheese in it. 🙂 Yay!!! Thanks for the recipes.
