With just 4 ingredients this dairy-free caramel sauce comes together quickly. You only need to have a little extra time to let the cream cheese soften. Be sure to read about the dairy-free cream cheese that I used below.

Dairy-Free Cream Cheese

There are several brands of dairy-free cream cheese available that you could choose to make with this recipe. In my local grocery stores, I could only find these two brands Kite Hill and Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

I’ve been a little hesitant to buy Kite Hill in the past because it’s pricey. So, when I saw the Philadelphia brand was at my local store and was less expensive I was ecstatic. I wanted to go ahead and try both brands in this favorite caramel apple dip that my family has loved for years to see which worked best.

Comparing two brands of dairy-free cream cheese by placing each of them on a plate to see how they soften.

This recipe calls for 8 ounces of cream cheese softened. So I removed the cream cheese from their packaging and placed each of them on a plate and cut them into pieces to help them soften.

The first thing I noticed is that straight from the refrigerator Kite Hill is already soft. It has an almond milk base. Whereas the Philadelphia brand has a coconut oil base and is hard coming straight from the refrigerator. So for this recipe, Kite Hill can be used right away and it is easy to mix. The Philadephia brand did need almost 60 minutes to fully soften.

After making the dip with both brands we really couldn’t any difference in taste. They were both delicious.

The dairy-free butter that I used is Country Crock Plant-Based Butter with avocado oil.

Is caramel vegan?

Most recipes and store-bought caramels do contain dairy products such as butter and milk. But with this recipe, all ingredients are plant-based.
