Make homemade french fries with this easy recipe for air fryer french fries. You’ll love how simple it is to get deliciously crispy homemade fries. Yes, you could use frozen french fries that are gluten-free and I do that too, but if you’re anything like me I don’t always have frozen french fries on hand while I normally do have fresh potatoes on hand.
Simple Steps to Make Air Fryer French Fries:
- Peel
- Slice
- Soak
- Dry
- Season
- Air Fry
- Enjoy
How To Make Air Fryer French Fries:
Peel potatoes and then cut them into in slices lengthwise about 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick. Next, cut each slice into strips and again around 1/4″ to 1/2″ wide.
Put the cut fries into a medium-size bowl and add 1/2 teaspoon salt and cover with water. Let soak in the salt water for 30 minutes. Pour fries into a colander and rinse off then place the fries on a clean towel and pat dry.
Preheat air fryer to 400° for 4 minutes. Rinse and dry the bowl that the fries were soaking in and then add the fries back to the bowl and pour 1 tablespoon olive oil over the fries and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir them around so they are all coated with the oil and seasoning.
Place fries in the preheated air fryer and spread them out to an even layer with some space between the fries. Cook at 400° for 10 minutes.
And here is where you get to decide if you want them any crispier. If you do shake them around and cook for 1-2 more minutes. If you don’t want them any crispier go ahead and serve them.
Serving size will vary depending on the size of your potatoes. In this recipe, I used two medium-sized russet potatoes to make 2 servings and I used a 5.8 qt air fryer so if you have a smaller size you may need to cook only one potato at a time.
If you’re doing batches to keep your fries warm while cooking the next batch place cooked fries on a cooling rack over a cookie sheet in the oven at 250°.
Serve french fries with the all-time favorite ketchup or try my homemade Chick-fil-A sauce.
Tips for Using an Air Fryer:
- My #1 tip for using the air fryer would be to not overcrowd the food in the air fryer basket. The food will cook faster and more evenly when there’s room for the heat to circulate.
- Use an oil sprayer to lightly coat your food with an oil that has a high smoke point like avocado or olive oil. You may need to mist your food a couple of times throughout the cooking process, especially in areas that may look dry.
- Lightly pepper your food on top once you put it in the air fryer. When it comes time to turn your food halfway through cooking you’ll be able to easily tell which pieces have been turned.

I often eat homemade fries. Like yourself. I’ve been eating them for about 6 months in my air fryer, but have done it in the oven for about 45 yrs. Low cal when you use spray oil. I love it a lot. I love onion rings as well, but I’m gluten and my doctor and are exploring different ideas for seasoning on the homemade onion rings. Perhaps when we post our recipe in a friendly recipe you can try it. My Dr totally understands my illnesses since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I’m 3.5 yrs cancer free, but I’m struggling a very little bit with my diet, but I believe we got the answers were looking for! It’s called it’s not just oils but batter it does matter for us who struggle with health issues.
